The Rats Are Coming! The Werewolves Are Here! (aka Curse of the Full Moon)

Low budget British movie.
I bought this movie to replace my old VHS copy. It is not the greatest movie, it is not the worst movie in my collection. But it is very watchable for a low budget movie. I like British horror movies being a Hammer Films fan way back when. And even though this is not a Hammer Film, it still has the British feel to it.

Baby Mama [HD]

"Baby Momma" -- Cute Flick!
This is another flick my 15 year old granddaughter drug me to, kicking and screaming (practically). It sounded DUMB, but she kept whining and I caved in. Well, guess what? I LOVED it! I was laughing so hard she kept banging me all through the movie to shut me up (saw it in the theater).

I see it got some less-than-wonderful reviews, and, as we know, everybody has different opinions. It begins with a single 37-year old career woman who is suddenly bitten by the baby bug and she knows her biological clock is ticking. She tries finding a "donor," but that seems to scare away her dates. She tries a sperm bank, looking for a suitable specimine who looks like he might produce a handsome child. Then she considers invetro but the doc tells her she probably can't get pregnant anyway because her uterus is T shaped. This leads her to seek out a surrogate mother to carry her child for her.

Now I agree, this doesn't really sound funny but it is. Tina Fey is great as...

it's a terrible flick--but it makes a wonderful rehearsal...
Baby Mama is a cute film with a few good laughs and some essentially entertaining comedy. It's by no means going to be "movie of the year;" but it isn't a flop, either. Baby Mama gets its strength from some excellent acting and the plot moves along at a good pace. My basic regret is that it could have been so much funnier than it was. It is an ambitious film, too, in that it tackles a serious issue through comedy. Sadly, it doesn't completely accomplish either goal. Sigh.

When the action begins, career woman Kate Holbrook (Tina Fey) realizes that her biological clock is ticking fast and she doesn't have the one thing to make her feel truly happy and complete--a baby. Everywhere Kate goes, she sees babies and she adores them. Eventually, Kate finds out that she can't have a baby even through artificial means; and then she goes to a fancy agency run by Chaffee Bicknell (Sigourney Weaver) to find a surrogate mother.

Naturally, Chaffee Bicknell reassures Kate that...

this movie was FUNNY!
The theater i saw it in was completely full, a huge surprise because I wasn't expecting a big interest in the film and there were severe storms outside. But the movie was a huge surprise, I laughed the whole time at the mixture of silly gags and very smart humor. The whole audience loved it.

And as much as I've loved all the raunchy comedies out lately, this movie was the PERFECT Anti-Apatow.

Tina and Amy had great chemistry and the supporting cast was great, including a decent performance from Steve Martin and a hilarious character performance from Sigourney Weaver.

Tale From the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight [HD]

A fun pastiche of EC Comics pulp
I was a big fan of the Tales from the Crypt TV show. Thus, I am a fan of this movie. It feels a lot like one of the Creepshow movies but has enough gore, humor and OTT carnage but it just doesn't have enough scope to brake away from the TV show and stand alone as a big screen movie.

Brayker (William Sadler) is a drifter who stumbles upon a lonely desert town after an explosive confrontation with The Collector (Billy Zane), a supremely evil being with Satanical powers who is desperate to get his hands on Brayker's mysterious talisman. Brayker spends the night in a shabby motel but The Collector soon turns up and unleashes hell upon the motel and it's inhabitants.

This is where the fun really kicks in. The Collector has fun enticing the residents (made up of Dick Miller, Charles Fleisher, Thomas Haden Church, Brenda Bakke, Jada Pinkett-Smith and CCH Pounder) to join him
on his dark quest and steal the talisman from Brayker.

Director Ernest Dickerson...

Genuine Horror in a Movie Made In the 90's!
It might be hard to believe but this movie is pretty damn scary! Granted, it does have a lot of funny parts to it but overall this movie really freaked me out! I stayed up the entire night after seeing it, laughing at myself but still unable to go to sleep! I kept telling myself, "Come on man, it's only a Tales From the Crypt movie!" but even that element seemed to be missing (The Cryptkeeper does make a hilarious entrance!)by that I mean it wasn't over the top, made for T.V. campy. This was very well made with some great special effects. This movie was produced by such people as Robert Zemeckis, Richard Donner, Joel Silver, etc...-in other words big names in the movie industry (this flick had some heavy backing!) The story line in this movie was amazingly complex for a horror film, yet it wasn't drawn out! Billy Zane was outstanding as the persistent and demonic "Collector", he pretty much steals the show. This is also the first movie I ever saw...

Better Than The Horror Movies of Today
Being a big fan of the TV series, this movie is a must. I have really enjoyed this movie for many years and it still isn't boring when I watch it. The special effects on this film are top notch for what they are, this was the days when claymation was still around (cryptkeeper director) and before CGI. So, all of the monsters were things you could touch instead of these fake computer monsters being made now. From the look of the demons, to the special effects used to show when one of the demons die, it all has something that fans will enjoy.

The movie has it's fair share of would be famous names. Billy Zane, Thomas Haden Church (from the TV series Wings and the upcoming Spider-man 3) and Jada Pinkett(before Smith was added)are great in this movie. Jada as the reluctant hero and Billy Zane as the wise cracking demon knight. Zane does carry the film and brings a comedy element to what could be scary. Let's not forget William Sadler, it was nice to see that he was the star of...

Beethoven's 5th [HD]

Good movie!
This was a very good movie--no cuss words, no violence. It is a truly G movie! However, I do not think very young children should see this movie since there are sightings of a "ghost." It turns out to be a logical explanation, but it may scare them.
It is funny, clean and suspenseful-just like a Nancy Drew mystery! This is a good movie and a must-see for kids who like suspense and adventure.

Beethoven's 5th
I'm using my mom's amazon account to type this review, I loved this movie ! Like a previous reviewer said this is alot like a kid friendley Nancy Drew mystery, It's a little cheesy at some portions but it's to be expected I guess. Daveigh Chase did a great job in this movie though ! She was extremley cute and is a great actress (which makes me wish she was little more well known but oh well she's still talented.) I definitley give this movie 5 stars ! :)

Great Movie
This is such a fantastic family movie....dog lovers will LOVE it and those who don't love dogs (!?) will start to!

The Hulk [HD]

Much Better Than The New Hulk, But Not For Today's Short-Attention Span Viewer
Since this movie is seven years old and already has plenty of reviews written, meaning it's doubtful this one will ever be seen, I'm going to keep it short. This movie was simply too smart for many of today's movie going audience. If stuff isn't blowing up every five minutes they lose interest, fast. It is no wonder to me the new Hulk was so well received compared to this one, because stuff was blowing up all the time.

Since I don't have a short attention span and I appreciate stuff like character development, a well written script, and an emotional core to my movies, this version of the Hulk delivered in spades. The effects were also fantastic, and I thought the CGI was very convincing, better than the new Hulk with it's synthetic looking CGI, which is impressive considering the new version had six years of technology advances over this version and in my opinion had nothing to show for it. Lastly, as someone who has emotional scars from my own father, and the very troubled...

In the Opinion of the Humble...
The "Hulk" is a good movie, often times great. The first half of the movie is a long, methodical character study of people under immense emotional torture, especially Bruce Banner (a pitch-perfect Eric Bana) and Betty Ross (Jennifer Connely). It is hinted that they share a dark past filled with absentee fathers and a secret military project that they might now be working on again, 30 years later. This first half or so is the reason why the "Hulk" was not well recieved among viewers and critics. People were expecting either another "Spiderman" or another "X-Men" or its sequel, filled with those films' brimming everyman qualities and light-pacing throughout, or the Hulk of the 70s t.v. show, who aided people when he had and anger spell. But director Ang Lee opted for a more tragic approach, with plenty of Freudinized angst, along the lines of repressed memories manifesting themselves in dreams. And while Lee sometimes overdoes it, his...

A Fascinating Film, Just Not a Great "Comic Book Movie"
It's hard to imagine that there has been or ever will be a super-hero movie that divides as many viewers as Ang Lee's ambitious 2003 filming of THE HULK.

From the pre-release buzz about how Lee had taken a revisionist tact with the origin of the Stan Lee-Jack Kirby Marvel comic book hero, to the first, fleeting -- and unfinished -- glimpses of the all-CGI green one during the Super Bowl, the comics-to- movie community had been eagerly awaiting, and debating, the big-budget film. Early reactions ranged from utter disgust to complete and total admiration, which brings me to my thoughts on the film -- one which ended up being sent to the Marvel scrap heap in lieu of a 2008 movie that pretended (basically) this film never happened.

Before I dive into specifics, I can say that I was first appalled when I heard about the concept of Lee and James Schamus' version. Having grown up on the old Bill Bixby-Lou Ferrigno show, plus the various cartoon incarnations, the idea...

Patch Adams [HD]

Meet a doctor who doesn't look, act, or think like a doctor!!!
+++++

This movie is based on the book "Gesundheit: Good Health is a Laughing Matter" by Hunter Doherty Adams with Maureen Mylander.

Mike Farrell of "M*A*S*H" fame was one of the producers of this movie.

This movie is also based on the true story of Hunter "Patch" Adams.

At the movie's beginning we are taken to the psychiatric ward of a hospital in 1969. We discover here how Hunter Adams (Robin Williams) gets his unique nickname of "Patch" and why he decides to become a medical doctor.

Two years later he goes to medical school where he encounters, among other things, a snobby roommate named Mitch (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a very traditional medical school dean (Bob Gunton), meets a fellow medical student named Truman (Daniel London) who becomes his good friend, and as well meets a stand-offish female medical student Corinne (Monica Potter) who eventually sees his point of view with respect to medicine.

Patch's antics at...

Gain inspiration & wisdom while you're entertained!
Robin Williams' portrayal of Dr. Patch Adams' medical school adventures was both entertaining and inspiring. Although Williams' comic genius shined through in his physical humor of clowning around (e.g. entertaining sick children by dancing with bedpans on his feet, an enema bulb on his nose and an IV stand as a dance partner) as well as quick verbal banter, the comedy is only part of Williams' acting repertoire and movie's appeal. Having seen Robin Williams mostly in interviews where he seemed to be spending every second trying to be funny, I was amazed at his ability to not only be serious, but to convincingly portray a spectrum of non-comic emotions/conditions: shock, grief, guilt, frustration, anger. All was not fun and games in the medical school education of Patch Adams, as he dealt with personal issues, personality clashes and the difficulties of trying change the institution of medicine without getting thrown out of medical school. I also enjoyed the work of the...

Great movie
Robin Williams gives an outstanding performance. It's touching, funny, and a whole lot cleaner than most movies today. Someone said that this movie showed people being murdered, blaspheming God, and showed you how to have sex. None of this is true. A girl *is* murdered, but you don't see anything at all and don't even know that until way after it happens. She is murdered by a severely insecure man who then kills himself, but you don't see this or even see their bodies afterwards. God is not really blasphemed, but there is one part where Patch sits on a cliff and talks to God about why things had to happen that way, and he considers commiting suicide. But this doesn't happen. And for the life of me I have no idea where they showed or even mentioned sex! The absolute closest thing to that would be at the end when he graduates from medical school... I don't want to give it away because it is hilarious, but don't worry, it's not dirty or nasty. I wouldn't recommend you watch it...

Breathless

Lucy and Ethel with cigarettes and whiskey
Excellent movie; it's funny and entertaining- Val Kilmer and Ray Liotta are good in the film and are a couple of names to draw people in (though Kilmer is in it very little- even though the plot revolves around him figuratively and literally). But the stars of the movie are definitely Kelli Giddish and Gina Gershon, the actresses played well off each other and they reminded me of "I Love Lucy" episodes with their back and forth bickering and scheming about the mess they are in.

I would recommend this movie for purchase; it's a movie that even though you know what's going to happen after watching it once, it's still entertaining to watch.

Blood , Guts, and TPQs
Gina Gershon(Lorna) and Kelli Giddish(Tiny) have great chemistry as their characters' predicament goes from bad to bloody. The whole movie takes place in a trailer out in the middle of NoWhere, Texas . The plot contains some surprises and some not-so-surprising twists and turns. The dialogue is funny as the girls try to deal with their seemingly hopeless situation. It's a fun movie to watch but not for the squeamish.

DOES BLOOD MAKE ME LOOK FAT?
I enjoyed the opening credits with bright use of the color red and showing the painted hands of a women preparing dinner. Gina Gershon stars as Lorna in this dark comedy that takes place in Texas in 1981. Dale (Val Kilmer) her husband of 17 years, is laid out on the floor as Gina's girlfriend Tiny (Kelli Giddish looking like a young Jane Curtin) walks in.

As things go on Val Kilmer, who is now tied up in a chair and has confessed to a bank robbery, is accidentally killed. The women suppose the money is hidden somewhere in the trailer. They decide to look for the loot and dispose of the body using household appliances. As the story goes on, the plot takes a number of twists, so much so that the final twist becomes easy to figure out.

This is a Coen style comedy, but falls short of the masters. I enjoyed this quirky film in spite of some of the predictability. Several laugh out loud moments as Gina creates a memorable character.

Starship Troopers: Invasion [HD]

CG Animation Film from the Director of "Appleseed"
"Starship Troopers: Invasion," fourth feature film of the series, is a computer animated film directed by Shinji Aramaki, a Japanese animation director, best known for "Appleseed" (2004). Three principal characters from the Starship Troopers series, Carmen Ibanez, Carl Jenkins and Johnny Rico appear, but their roles are relatively small, in the film's first half in particular.

The story goes like this. Earth Federation Force troopers led by Lieutenant Tony Daugherty (Sam Roman) are sent to Federation's outpost Fort Casey that was attacked by bugs. One of the survivors is Carl Jenkins (Justin Doran), ministry of Paranormal Warfare, who takes over the command of the Starship John A. Warden from Carmen Ibanez (Luci Christian), and leaves the bug-infested base without telling what happened.

After the mission, Johnny Rico (David Matranga) - he is General Rico now - gives a new assignment to Carmen and the trooper team on the fast attack ship Alesia. John A. Warden is...

Follows It's Previous Movies
Not bad. It's all CGI. I sort of liked how they worked at getting the action and such to flow. It's hard using CGI to do this and they pretty much made it work.
As far as the story goes, it follows the Starship Troopers story line pretty good. I think that made Carl a bit more sinister than the previous movies but I guess that's OK, as I guess if you had his mental "gifts" you might be too. I noticed there was a good job of using the stuff from the previous movies too. (One note: They really must make their starships really well to have that ship go thru what it went thru an still crash in one piece!) Anyway, I enjoyed it and look forward to the next one.

Superior animation, great story line, great entertainment
Some of the best animation I've encountered. The video was just plain fun. On the down side, the story continues the characters developed in earlier films, but their appearance is totally changed. It would have been better to use the animated likenesses of the original actors.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within [HD]

Simple Values - Spectacular Production
'Final Fantasy' is a computer game that has gone through countless versions and editions. Taken as a whole, this mythos is probably one of the best know games in its genre. It is clear from the beginning of this film that Sony and Hironbu Sakaguchi (producer, director, and writer) were intent on topping an already brilliant history of graphic accomplishments. In a sense, 'The Spirits Within' represents a piece of history in the making. It is the first film that presents a startling approximation of life using only automation.

The plot is simple. An asteroid falling to earth carries within it a host of phantom creatures that seem hell bent on destroying earthly life. Civilization has been reduced to living in shielded enclaves, and it is only a matter of time before the planet becomes a haunted wasteland. Aki Ross and her mentor, Dr. Sid, are working on the creation of a neutralizing 'wave' based on the eight basic phantom life forms. General Hein does not trust Dr. Sid's...

So much potential, but wasted...
There have been many reviews about this movie that have ranged from excellent to shoddy, but mine will fall in the middle for a couple of reasons I will get to. I'll tell you what I found cool and what I found to be lacking. First off, I saw this movie in a digital projection theater. The colors were mind-blowing to say the least. I was constantly losing track of the story because I couldn't take my focus off the spectacular animation. The animation is so rich and textured...let's just say that you have never seen anything like it-real or fabricated. It truly is amazing. The voice casting is perfect. No slackers anywhere. The idea for the story is very innovative, not just some traditional sci-fi retread. But (and there always is a but), the actual dialogue and character development are lacking. Baldwin sometimes seems like a romantic distraction for Ming Na. Is Woods' character supposed to be a sympathetic bad guy because he talks about his family before he commits his bad deeds...

An under-appreciated, and totally underrated movie
One of the best computer generated films I have ever seen. Final Fantasy - the Spirits Within was a joy to watch.

It was exciting, funny, poignant, exciting, romantic, joyful, future hopeful and totally mesmerising from start to finish.

With great actors voicing the animated heroes, we are treated to a state of the art adventure in which earth has been decimated by alien phantoms and the only hope for the survival of the human race are eight earth bound energy-spirits that can stop what only be described as Armageddon.

The exquisite Dr Aki Ross along with cynical but mostly good hearted Captain Edwards and his band of disparate marines set out to find these spirits before the megalomaniac General Hein can ruin any chance Earth has for survival.

The graphics are absolutely stunning, the animated characters look so life like you find yourself doing a double take all the time. Aki Ross is especially life like and Captain Edwards positively...

Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory

Powerful And Disturbing: Eighteen Years Later, The Harrowing True Life Case Of The West Memphis Three Continues
The plight of the infamous West Memphis Three has been the center of controversy for almost two decades now. Upon discovering three eight year old boys murdered and discarded in the Robin Hood Hills area of West Memphis, Arkansas in 1993, a subsequent investigation caused local police to target three teen outsiders for the crime. Based on the most specious of evidence and a rampant desire to see justice done for such a heinous act, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley were convicted and sentenced in 1994 despite a clear lack of physical evidence or motive. Due to Echols appearance, interest in metal music, and fascination with disturbing imagery, the deaths were chalked up to being a part of a dark occult ritual. And a frightened and justifiable mob mentality ruled the day (especially as word of Misskelley's questionable confession circulated).

But the facts never really added up and filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky were on hand to document the...

The crime of the 20th - 21st centuries reaches some finality
PARADISE LOST 3: PURGATORY (2012, 120 minutes, HBO Films) - Here is the anxiously awaited 3rd installment of the continuing sagas of Damien Wayne Echols, James Baldwin and Jesse Misskelley, Jr., all convicted of murdering three 8-year-old boys in 1993. It wasn't aired on HBO and I just saw it On Demand - the only place it is available right now. It had originally been scheduled to air in January.

This compelling albeit slightly muddled documentary sequel begins by retelling the story of "The West Memphis Three" - Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley - and the horrible crime of three young boys' murders. At first I thought this was retread, but I quickly realized this was a vital documentary tool to catch up a viewer who might be new to the story.

The documentary does an excellent job of stunning the viewer by explaining how the case exploded in everyone's faces in the mid-2000s. New evidence was discovered and all of it re-examined; among the evidence was DNA and a new...

The DVD has cool special features, and the film... legendary and revelatory
This "Paradise Lost" trilogy is beyond documentary film making. A better description of the films would be that they are legendary journalistic heroism that are philanthropic education for the American public, in regards to the horrors that CAN arise from the U.S. justice system when it fails.

This film was never meant to be the "final chapter" of the Berlinger and Sinofsky series on the West Memphis 3 case. When the film was practically 100% finished, a surprise hearing was called regarding the case. The hearing was prompted by the fact that the original trial judge David Burnett (who was also the judge for EVERY SINGLE APPEAL HEARING regarding this case) denied the WM3 an evidentiary hearing, despite allegations of juror misconduct in the original trial, recantations of testimony used in court, and DNA evidence that excluded the three defendants from the crime scene or the bodies AND pointed in a different direction that the police never investigated. Burnett's decision...

Kill List [Blu-ray]

Clever or incoherent?
I saw a screening of this last night and was very impressed. While some other reviewers here have criticized the pacing, I didn't have a problem with it. As long as I'm into the characters, I don't mind how long a story takes to unfold, and I was engrossed by the people in this film.

It's something of a hybrid film, a gritty British gangster movie that slowly morphs into something more horrific. Nearly every element of the production is fantastic, from the acting to the score to the cinematography. It is shockingly violent at times, at other moments thrilling, and, surprisingly, quite funny upon occasion.

What gives me pause is the writing. It isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination: the characters are fully fleshed out, the story is compelling, and everything moves along nicely. Where the trouble comes is in the ending. You might have heard some buzz about it being a shocker, and it sort of was. Part of the reason for that, though, is because it receives the...

Junior [HD]

Charming & Funny? Inconceivable!
Arnold Schwarzenegger is probably my favorite movie star. For my money, there is no greater action hero. I think I enjoy him even more, though, in his lighter, more comedic movies. Take "Junior," for example. It is one of the most charming, delightful and funny films I've seen in a long time. Arnold proves once again that he is as comfortable and self-assured in high concept comedy as he is in high octane action. This film is a real winner.

Schwarzenegger stars as Dr. Alex Hesse, a biochemist doing research on a revolutionary new wonder drug that eliminates miscarriages. Helping him to develop "Expectane" is Dr. Larry Arbogast (Danny DeVito), an obstetrician and fertility doctor. Their project is jeopardized, though, when the FDA refuses to give them approval. The university cuts off their funding, kicks them out and turns their lab over to Dr. Diana Reddin (Emma Thompson).

Fearing the loss of a potential fortune, Arbogast convinces Alex to test the drug on...

Lots of Laughs
At first I really didn't want to see this movie but was forced into it,much like Alex Hesse (schwarzenegger) was talked into doing an illegal scientific experiment on himself by his collegue Larry Arbogast (DeVito).

Alex has invented a wonderful new drug to help women who tend to have miscarriages. After the FDA won't approve expectane and the university kicks him out of their lab Alex decides to move back to europe.Larry talks him into doing an experiment on himself so that they can get funding for more research. And after they get enough data they'll end it and noone will ever know.

But the problem is Alex gets attatched to his unborn baby and continues taking the expectane without Larry knowing,of course he eventually does find out and aggrees to help him.

Along the way though Alex falls in love with Dr. Diana Reddin (Thompson) and she has a key role in the movie so pay attention in the resturant scene.

I don't understand why so many people didn't enjoy this film.Maybe it's...

Ivan Reitman's study of inversion
Without question, an under-rated, subversive, classic farce, and a study of total inversion. Examples of the latter include

Arnold - the Last Action Hero becomes a sensitive "Mommy"?

Danny DeVito - usually plays the heavy; now plays the major sympathetic role in the movie

Emma Thompson - takes a break from the Shakespeare in favor of physical comedy

As many other reviewers have stated, this movie is also a realistic and side-splitting look at pregnancy.

The subversion is its underlying pro-life theme: "My body, my choice", inverted. This is so politically incorrect that I often wonder how Reitman got away with it.

To the Aussies who reviewed this a while back: What the hell were you expecting? A Predator sequel, maybe? Yeah, I remember when I had my first beer.....

Fallen [Blu-ray]

Fallen is one of the best horror/thrillers of the decade
Fallen is underrated, as I felt it wasn't nowhere near as bad as some critics said it to be. It's a very interesting mix of The Exorcist and The Silence of the Lambs and Seven. The result is one of the best thrillers of the decade. It's not quite up there with Lambs or Seven but it's as good as Arlington Road and is significantly superior to The Bone Collector and Kiss the Girls.

The plot is about Detective John Hobbes (Denzel Washington), who has just captured serial killer Edgar Reese (Elias Koteas). Before Reese is executed, he speaks to Hobbes in a strange language and tells him a riddle, asking him why there's a space between Lyons and Spakowsky. Hobbes doesn't think much of this and watches silently as Reese is executed in the gas chamber.

The next day, another murder occurs, and Hobbes and his partner Jonesy (John Goodman) check it out. To his shock, Hobbes finds the same riddle Reese told him scrawled on the wall of the victim's apartment. Unraveling...

Fallen - A classic in the psychological thriller genre!
Simply put, "Fallen" is a pure classic in the psychological thriller genre! Very few films in this genre that attempt such status actually ever achieve as successfully as this film does. From the very beginning of this film to the end it is an intense, script and character driven silver screen masterpiece. One of the most interesting aspects of this film is that it can be watched over and over again, given time in between viewings, and one can pick up different things every time, making it that much better.

Performance wise, Denzel Washington delivers one of his most powerful and memorable performances in this fine film. Of course, over the years he's proven himself to be one of Hollywood's finest in that very few films of his are less than spectacular. This particular role for him almost engenders the aura that it was specifically written with him in mind as the lead. John Goodman's performance is right on par with his usual style of acting, making the film that...

Very, Very Creepy
This gets good marks simply because it is such an interesting, involving story that hooks you right away and every time you watch it and doesn't overwhelm you with violence and gore.

Denzel Washington is appealing as always as the good guy and John Goodman is surprisingly low-key for most of the movie. All the characters are very interesting and the special effects are creepy. The story is pure "Hollywood theology" mean also means the characters - include the heroes - in here have no clue about God or the purpose of life.

The DVD provides excellent entertainment. The visuals are decent on this disc and sound-effects are chilling in spots. As the demon sees through the eyes of people and passes by with these "whoosh" sounds, it's very effective. As mentioned, the film doesn't need a lot of violence to succeed with it's horror-type tale.

One note about the final scene. if you get confused, you aren't alone. Maybe I'm not too bright because it took me a...

Essential Games of the Philadelphia Phillies

Disappointing
Very disappointing this set includes two games that already been released on two previous editions before. The 1980 NLCS clincher against Houston and game 5 of the 2008 World Series against Tampa. I'm sure MLB could've easily found two other games to substitute instead. Maybe Steve Carlton's 300th win or his original breaking the strike out record. Howabout the dramatic way Mike Schmidt hit his 500th home run against Pittsburgh as examples of something original. If they wanted to include something from 1980 howabout game 4 against Houston or the division clincher against Montreal.

Great Phillies games
These are a must for Phillies enthusiasts, young and old fans.Really good restoration of the 80 & 93 playoff games.

History
I own two games from the discs in this set, but to get the no-hitter in the playoffs is the reson I brought it. To have a piece of baseball history is the reason to buy this set.

Roller Town

Must see 'Roller Boogie' (1979) first
Just watched the movie 'Roller Town' for the first time last night and can't wait to watch it again. I had never heard of the Canadian comedy troupe, Picnicface, but they are responsible for this gem. The story line takes most of it's cues from the 1979 movie 'Roller Boogie'. In some twisted way, you could say Roller Town is a remake of Roller Boogie! Do yourself a favor and watch the original a few times first. Many of the jokes in Roller Town will be much funnier.
If you appreciate SCTV or 'kids in the hall', you can handle Roller Town. This movie isn't for everybody and it did catch me off guard with some brief gore and sexual explicitness of sorts. But as soon as you decide to roll with this movie and understand that many of the jokes are poking fun at Roller Boogie (1979), you may soon find yourself in stitches.

Awful.
Realy awful. Not even remotely entertaining. This looked like a cute movie. It was put together by a comedy troupe, so I expected some laughs. And it combined two of my favorite things - roller skating and video games. Despite the potential this movie was pathetic.

If you like out there and corny...
This is your movie! The off color humor and hard to follow scripts make you want to give up on this movie. Follow it through to the end, if you can. Not a great ending but you will always wonder what happened if you don't finish it. You can do it!

Seven Silent Films: Lost for a Century

DEGRADED but still a MUST HAVE
The first shorts of the 7 on this DVD is enough reason for any cinephile, cinema buff, social historian, or Black American to own this DVD.
HOWEVER, presumably from misguided marketing towards increased sales, all of the 7 films have an aspect ration of 1:85!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Movies are first and primarily a visual medium. How they could imagine this would appeal to those interested in these EARLY shorts I can not fathom.
The movies were RESTORED VERY WELL, and because of this and of the contents on this DVD, (primarily the first short), I still give this DVD 3 stars.
I would say if you are very interested with the first 1 reeler, which is the first known ALL Black cast film, do not let the major top and bottom image loss from cropping
deter you from buying this DVD.

Fidel

Fidel - Then & Now...
Just saw the HBO film "Comadante"(2003), which I ordered through the Amazon UK Marketplace, by noted director Oliver Stone, and found it an excellent recent profile of the "Old Fidel" Castro. It seems like such a perfect "Bookend" to Saul Landau's excellent portrait of a "Young Fidel" Castro in his Prime, shot 36 years before, beautifully filmed in color, as he made his rounds all over Cuba and gave his "Progress Report" on Cuban Socialism, after it's first 10 years. Finally, after 30 years, it will soon be available on American Home Video, on February 24, 2009, for Americans to judge for themselves.

It has now been 50 years since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution. The fact that both of these excellent films by American directors have been virtually BANNED from U.S audiences since they were made, shows that the Dark Forces of Demonization and Fear have been blocking average Americans from the opportunity to look objectively at Castro, and yes, perhaps even becoming...

A unique perspective
What is so rewarding about this traditional-style documentary is the humanization of Castro, a figure made grotesque and often demonized in the United States by a very small minority of persons. Regardless of how you perceive "socialism", this documentary shows Castro from a relatively positive profile and therefore his and Cuba's history from a unique perspective. Americans will be surprised to discover that in many parts of the globe Castro is considered a great hero, whereas here he is portrayed as equal parts monster and tyrant. No mention is made of repressive measures or political prisoners however, an interesting omission, but given the fact that almost all reports and documentaries focus exclusively on his "repression" and the fate of political prisoners, it is somewhat understandable. Even the uneducated would benefit from seeing this documentary, and would probably think of Castro in a different light.

Great DVD
I've seen other DVDs that were clearly biased against Fidel and the Cuban Revolution. This one was less critical than most orthodox Marxists would be, however I still enjoyed it and recommend it to many people.

Meanwhile

Solid late-period Hal Hartley.
This is the first Hal Hartley movie i've seen where the story overtly contains reference to himself as an off-screen character so it seems at times as if he is veering towards the super-weird like some of those french dudes (Goddard, cocteau) who did similar things in their later careers. This movie definitely has a soul though, is refreshingly brisk and ultimately a positive tale. It deserves mentioning that the millenial New York cinematography is some of the finest in recent years.

Kill List

UNNERVING
Shows a raw talent in economical filmmaking. There is a mine this guy has tapped into. Creepy as it gets.

The best time you'll have feeling unnerved..
A fantastic release to match an equally fantastic film. Leave all expectations to the door and enjoy this hell ride.

Titanic 3-D (History Channel) [Blu-ray]

Hi-Def 3-D Takes You Up Close To Stunning Underwater Images Of The Titanic Wreckage
NOTE: Current Product Information lists the run time on this DVD as 94 minutes. That is incorrect, it is 45 minutes. If it has already been corrected by the time you read this, please disregard.

Our fascination with the tragedy of the Titanic has never waned. In April, it was the 100th anniversary of the sinking of this "unsinkable" giant on its maiden voyage. There has, through the years, been so much material presented about the disaster through various media outlets. Enthusiasts and casual historians with an interest in the topic have likely snapped up some of the higher profile pieces related to that fateful night. With that said, don't be surprised if "Titanic: 100 Years in 3-D" feels very similar to other specials you may have seen. I was excited to check out this new presentation, largely for the promise of 3-D. The distinctive selling point of this 45 minute short is the inclusion of underwater footage of the wreckage shot in a revolutionary new 3-D HD...

Nice underwater 3D images
Titanic 100yrs History channel in 3D. has some truly great 3D images of the ship resting on the ocean floor. Not just the 3D, but the sharpness and lighting are also top notch. If you're interested in seeing some excellent shots of the wreckage, this is definitely a satisfying view.

Now, as far as the documentary goes, I'd say it's not really much better or worse then the many Titanic documentaries that have been seen on cable since the new millennium began. It's decent enough.

Despite another review, I had no problems playing this on my 3D computer and the 3D was fine. No problems at all. I must say, however, that I saw no way to play this in 2D. I tried just out of curiosity, and just got double images. So, it would seem if you don't have 3D, you'd probably do best to wait on this one. I know all 3D Blu-rays (at least the movies) are supposed to include a 2D version and I'll keep trying. If I can get it to work, I'll update. There is no 2D option on the menu,...

Titanic 3D
I am a history buff and really found this DVD to be extremely interesting. The 3D version made it something you have to see.

Korczak: Kino Classics Remastered Edition [Blu-ray]

The Great and Loveable Teacher Korczak
Every movie Andrzej Wajda made is unique and memorable and many of them are masterpieces. This film made in 1990 is one of my favorites. If you've seen Polanski's THE PIANIST this is an excellent film to see if you want to learn more about what life was like in the Warsaw Ghetto.

Before war breaks out Korczak has already achieved much notoriety. His voice is heard by millions on his radio show and he is recognized in the street by both Poles and Germans alike as a progressive minded humanitarian. He is also a doctor who runs an orphanage for Jewish children and in the opening scenes we hear him on his radio program as he tells just how much his childen mean to him. As soon as the political climate within Poland changes however the doctors program is cancelled and before long the doctor along with his 200 children are marched toward the Warsaw Ghetto. At first the doctor believes the war will be a short one and he confronts the Germans and shames them for their mistreatment of the...

Unforgettable Movie
I saw this movie with a friend in the summer of 1992 at an art theater in St. Louis and went back the next and final night to see it again. It was a gripping, beautiful portrayal of a fantastic story. I have never forgotten this film and was thrilled to find it listed here on Amazon. I cannot recommend this movie enough.

A mirror image to the Pianist
Possible spoiler herein...
Better than the Pianist? Tough call, but yes in many ways. Polanski is definitely better cinematically, but Wayda, from Holland's script, renders human relations more finely. Probably its biggest weakness is the choppiness between plot lines. For me, the Poles definitely lead the way on cinematic treatment of the Holocaust.
Szpilman was aloof, and Korczak fully engaged, and their trajectories diverge. Korczak was a world renowned orphanage director and pediatrician, whose radio show was massively popular among all Poles before the War. This meant he was given every chance to escape safely, and walk away from his hundreds of Jewish orphans in the Jewish ghetto; but, instead, his absolute devotion to giving his orphans some semblance of childhood drove him to "deal with the devil himself." On the other hand he knows that the children will have to deal with death at an early age, and he is committed to giving them appropriate comfort and emotional...
